Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? by Bill Martin and Eric Carle is a simple rhythmic story that introduces children to wild animals and the sounds they make: ‘Polar Bear, Polar Bear, what do you hear? I hear a lion roaring in my ear…Lion, lion what do you hear? I hear a hippopotamus snorting in my ear…’

As well as teaching children new words like roaring, snorting, fluting, braying and trumpeting – and perhaps some unfamiliar animal names too, this colourful book provides plenty of opportunity to extend children’s literacy and language skills and develop a love of books.

After the story there will be listening activities to engage with, small world animals to explore as well as sensory play and craft activities all linked to the theme of zoo animals.
